A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Michael Mays attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he received the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, and earned his Master of Church Music degree in Vocal Performance from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 2004. His accomplishments include first and second place honors in each of his three auditions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Mr. Mays has also performed on several national and international tours as soloist with various professional choirs and has performed with the Chattanooga Symphony in such opera roles as El Remendado in Carmen, Ruiz in Il Trovatore, Spoletta in Tosca, and Borsa in Rigoletto; with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Opera Workshop as Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and as the title character in Samuel Barber’s Chanticleer; and in such oratorio as Obadiah in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Tenor in Handel’s Messiah, Greg Nelson and Bob Farrell’s Savior, and The Seasonings and Missa Hilarious by Dr. Peter Schickele (alias P.D.Q. Bach).

VOICE INSTRUCTION
Michael has been teaching private voice lessons since his college days. Since 1993, he has worked with scores of voices, both young and old, helping them find the best version of themselves to share with their audiences. Specializing in bel canto singing technique, Michael works with students to produce a thoroughly safe, yet effective and powerful singing technique. He teaches in his home studio as well as remotely via Skype or Zoom, per the student's needs and preferences.
